Hi folks, McGruff the Crime Dog® here. I’ve been working hard for over 25 years to help people, especially kids, learn how to be safe and make their neighborhoods safer. I became famous because people loved my valuable advice on safety issues. I go all over the country to talk to people about how they can "Take a Bite out of Crime." In the beginning, my advice focused on personal and home safety. Lately, I’ve addressed broader crime prevention concerns – from community preparedness to identity theft.
Now we’re all facing a new danger, cyber crime. With your help, we’re going to "Take a Bite Out of Cyber Crime."
In the right hands, technology can change our lives for the better. But in the wrong hands, technology can hurt us, through identity theft, online fraud, child exploitation, and many other crimes.
Children, who are most at risk, learn about computers and the Internet at an early age. But just as you wouldn’t let children cross a busy road without some safety rules, you shouldn’t send them onto the information superhighway without teaching them the rules of the road. Too many dangerous people can reach children - and adults - through the Internet. Today’s technology is a wonderful tool, but you must know how to use it safely.
That is why I’m on a quest with the "Take a Bite Out of Cyber Crime" campaign to empower and rally millions of computer and digital device users in the battle against the continually growing plague of computer viruses, worms, spam, spyware, phishing, identity theft and online predators.
Quick Stats:
- More than 75 percent of children recognize me.
- I have a classy corvette, a monster truck, and a wiener wagon. However, I most enjoy riding in patrol cars and assisting law enforcement.
- My favorite crime prevention techniques are to teach children specific tips to be safe at home and school and to help law enforcement officers do their jobs better.
- I really am a “ham” when it comes to getting my word out to the media. I love doing public service announcements for television and radio or posing for print or billboard advertising.
